Cost Accountant

Job Description/General Function
Cost Accountant/Analyst

Responsible for development and maintenance of Cost Accounting systems for all Thatcher entities, including understanding operating costs, monitoring cost variances, evaluating and maintaining reliability of cost information; analyze operating costs by production unit, develop cost standards by product or product group, monitor cost-per-unit results and initiate corrections to reporting processes to ensure flow of accurate, timely information; prepare and report results of cost evaluations and audits.

Desired Qualifications
• B.S. in Accounting, Finance or Business Management;
• 2-4 years experience in cost accounting, financial analysis, or other finance related functions in a manufacturing environment;
• Extensive experience and proficiency in MS Excel and MS Word;
• Experience in data base management helpful, but not required (Access, dBase, SQL, etc.);
• Working knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles;
• Ability to analyze complex data and effectively communicate observations and conclusions;
• Ability to supervise others and to work independently without constant supervision; and
• Speak, write and understand English fluently;

Major Accountabilities
• Review daily production results to identify unusual or inaccurate cost information;
• Review daily ‘low margin’ reports and perform analysis of root causes;
• Coordinate periodic inventory valuation activities and ensure that unit costs reflect actual costs;
• Analyze direct and indirect operating costs by cost center and establish cost standards by product and product group
• Monitor actual product cost results vs. established standards; investigate and report variances;
• Monitor inventory movements to insure appropriate costs are assigned at each level of movement;
• Assist in monthly gross profit compilations and reviews; investigate and resolve unusual unit cost results;
• Develop costing ‘report cards’ for cost center accountability;
• Evaluate capital project results vs. budget expectations; and
• Perform other tasks, assignments and projects as assigned by CORPORATE CONTROLLER, CFO, or other corporate management.

Physical Requirements
• Duties require extensive use of computer keyboard and mouse;
• Must be able to sit in one place for extended periods of time, but may also require some limited movement around office location; (Office is two floors without elevator)
• No heavy lifting required.
